What is the Structural Dynamics Assessment?
While we’re generally cautious about the use of diagnostic tools, we’ve found the Structural Dynamics assessment, based on the work of David Kantor, to offer a uniquely powerful way into conversations about group dynamics.
This assessment helps individuals and teams make sense of the patterns in their communication, especially under pressure or in high-stakes situations. It highlights the roles people tend to adopt in group settings and how those roles interact, often unconsciously.
By mapping both the behavioural (what’s said) and structural (what’s beneath the surface) dynamics, it offers insight into how things move, or get stuck, within a team.

Why Structural Dynamics over all the other assessments out there?
We’re cautious about the limits of any assessment. No tool can fully capture the complexity of human interaction. What matters is how we use the insights to open up conversation, not to label or box people in. Structural Dynamics helps teams do just that: it’s a starting point for deeper dialogue.
Most assessments tell you what people are like, personality types, strengths, preferences. Structural Dynamics tells you how people behave in conversation, especially under pressure or in moments of uncertainty. It focuses on real-time interaction, not static traits. That means your team doesn’t just gain insight, they get a shared language to talk about what’s happening in the moment and practical ways to shift unhelpful patterns.
